Highton Automotive Services have got your back. When buying car, a Pre-Purchase Inspection is essential to be sure of the condition of the vehicle. To get a more complete picture of your prospective vehicle, please book our Comprehensive Vehicle Inspection.

A pre-purchase vehicle inspection is carried out for a vehicle being sold either by private sale or through a motor car trader. Comprehensive vehicle inspections are the most complete survey of your vehicle. Highton Automotive Services can perform Pre-Purchase Inspections and Comprehensive Vehicle Inspections for your peace of mind.

At Highton Automotive Services our mechanics will carry out a detailed visual inspection, an engine test and a road test on your vehicle. Concluding the inspection, we provide a detailed report with the information you need to make an informed decision*. To arrange a Pre-Purchase Inspection, make an appointment online or call us now!

*(Because of limited access, the level of complexity or specialised tools and equipment required, there are some vehicles that we cannot inspect, or can only conduct a comprehensive inspection on).

Comprehensive Vehicle Inspections are the most complete inspection of your vehicle and checks even more components of the vehicle than a Pre-Purchase Inspection.

Where possible, the car is placed on a hoist for our inspectors to have greater visibility of components and increased accessibility of the undercarriage. Car wheels are removed to allow access to braking components for an inspection, and the lining size and disc thickness are measured against industry standards**.

**Please note: The vehicle inspection is based on a visual external examination of components only. Components are not dismantled to examine internal parts. Some vehicle faults can be diagnosed only by dismantling the engine or are intermittent in operation and not evident from an external examination at the time of inspection.

Pre purchase vehicle inspections in Highton

Need a Certificate of Roadworthiness (RWC) in Highton? In Victoria, most vehicles require a current roadworthy certificate when being sold or re-registered, with some exemptions applying. A roadworthy inspection is carried out by a Licensed Vehicle Tester (LVT) to determine whether the vehicle meets the required roadworthiness standards.

At Highton Automotive Services, our Licensed Vehicle Testers can inspect vehicles and issue Certificates of Roadworthiness, with Hybrid and Electric Vehicles also covered by our licensing and inspection capabilities. This provides Highton and surrounding-area drivers with a convenient option for obtaining an RWC for petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles. We can also arrange pre-purchase inspections when a more comprehensive assessment of a vehicle is required.

A roadworthy inspection is focused on whether a vehicle meets the applicable safety and roadworthiness requirements for a Certificate of Roadworthiness. The inspection covers important safety-related areas of the vehicle, with testing and inspection carried out according to the requirements applying to Licensed Vehicle Testers in Victoria.

A roadworthy certificate may also be required in certain other circumstances, including clearing some defect notices or meeting specific registration and inspection requirements. If a vehicle passes, the Certificate of Roadworthiness is issued through the relevant VicRoads system. For a vehicle sale, the certificate must generally have been issued within 30 days of the sale.

It is important to understand that a Certificate of Roadworthiness is not a complete assessment of a vehicle's compliance with every requirement for registration, nor is it a guarantee of the vehicle's overall mechanical condition. Some vehicle requirements are governed by the Australian Design Rules (ADRs), which establish national minimum standards for the construction and safety of vehicles and trailers. Compliance with every ADR cannot necessarily be determined through a standard roadworthy inspection alone.

The roadworthiness standards are established by the relevant Victorian authorities, rather than by the workshop or individual Licensed Vehicle Tester. The role of the Licensed Vehicle Tester is to inspect the vehicle against the applicable requirements and determine whether it meets the standards necessary for a Certificate of Roadworthiness to be issued. This distinction is important when considering what an RWC does – and does not – tell you about a vehicle.

What a Roadworthy Certificate Does Not Confirm

It is important to understand that a roadworthy inspection and a pre-purchase inspection are not the same thing. An RWC is concerned with roadworthiness and safety requirements; it is not a complete assessment of the vehicle's overall mechanical condition, reliability, history or value. VicRoads specifically notes that a roadworthy certificate does not guarantee that a vehicle is mechanically reliable.

If you're considering buying a used vehicle, a separate independent pre-purchase inspection can provide a much broader assessment of its condition. This can help identify potential mechanical issues that may not form part of the roadworthy inspection.

As more Victorians choose Hybrid and Electric Vehicles, it is important to use a tester authorised to inspect the vehicle type being presented. Highton Automotive Services is licensed to inspect and issue Certificates of Roadworthiness for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles, giving local EV and hybrid owners the option to have their vehicle's roadworthiness assessed by a suitably licensed provider.

The roadworthy inspection remains focused on the applicable roadworthiness requirements rather than being a complete EV or hybrid health assessment. If you require additional mechanical, electrical or vehicle condition checks, Highton Automotive Services can discuss the appropriate inspection or service with you.

If you need an RWC in Highton for a vehicle sale, re-registration or another approved purpose, contact Highton Automotive Services to arrange a roadworthy inspection.

The suspension and steering systems in your vehicle play a vital role in ensuring stability, comfort, and safety while driving. They work together to absorb shocks from uneven road surfaces, maintain proper tyre contact with the road, and provide precise handling. Without regular maintenance, these systems can wear out over time, leading to compromised performance and increased risks on the road.

At Highton Automotive Services, we specialise in keeping these crucial systems in excellent condition. By addressing potential issues early, we help prevent unnecessary damage to other components, such as your tyres, and ensure your vehicle remains reliable and efficient. Proper suspension care not only improves your driving experience but also helps to maintain the overall structural integrity of your vehicle.

Our expert mechanics are trained to identify and resolve problems across a wide range of vehicles. Whether it’s a minor adjustment or a more detailed repair, we take pride in delivering services that prioritise your safety and comfort.

At Highton Automotive Services, we understand that different vehicles come with unique suspension and steering systems, each requiring specific expertise. That’s why our skilled mechanics are equipped to work on a diverse range of vehicles, including 4WDs, 4X4s, light trucks, utes, and vans. Whether you use your vehicle for everyday commuting, heavy-duty work, or off-road adventures, we have the knowledge and tools to cater to your needs.

Modern suspension systems can vary greatly between vehicle types, with components designed to handle distinct driving conditions and loads. Our team has extensive experience in identifying and addressing issues, no matter how complex or specialised your vehicle's system may be. We stay up-to-date with the latest developments in suspension and steering technologies, ensuring that we can provide the best solutions for your vehicle.

In addition to servicing vehicles used for general road driving, we’re well-versed in handling systems tailored for rugged terrain or heavier loads. This includes everything from light commercial vehicles to off-road capable models. Each service we perform is carried out with the same attention to detail and commitment to maintaining your vehicle’s reliability and safety.

At Highton Automotive Services, we carry out a detailed inspection process to ensure your vehicle’s suspension system is performing as it should. The process begins with raising the car on a hoist, allowing our mechanics full access to the suspension components. This step ensures that every element of the system is visible for a thorough examination.

Once the vehicle is secured and elevated, the wheels are carefully removed. With the wheels off, our mechanics can inspect key parts of the suspension system, including shock absorbers, springs, control arms, and bushings. During this inspection, we check for any signs of wear, damage, cracks, or leaks that could affect the system’s functionality. Components like shock absorbers are assessed for fluid leaks, while bushings and joints are examined for excessive wear or cracks.

This meticulous approach helps us identify issues such as misalignment, uneven tension, or worn-out parts that may not be immediately visible during routine checks. For vehicles with advanced or heavy-duty suspension systems, such as those used for off-road driving or carrying heavier loads, we pay close attention to the components designed to handle these specific demands.

Each step of the process is carried out using professional tools and techniques to ensure precision. If we find any parts that require attention, our mechanics will discuss the options with you before proceeding with any repairs or replacements. This thorough inspection helps to catch potential issues early, keeping your suspension system in the best possible condition.

A failing suspension system often reveals itself through noticeable changes in your vehicle’s performance and handling. One of the clearest indicators is uneven tyre wear, which can signal an imbalance within the suspension, leading to poor contact with the road. You may also notice your vehicle bouncing excessively or dipping forward when braking, which points to weakened or failing shock absorbers.

Steering difficulties can be another warning sign. If the steering feels stiff, unresponsive, or if the vehicle pulls to one side while driving, this could indicate issues within the suspension or alignment. Additionally, unusual noises such as knocking, creaking, or clunking sounds when driving over uneven surfaces or turning corners may suggest worn or damaged components, like bushings or control arms.

For vehicles designed for heavier loads or off-road use, any reduction in stability when navigating rough terrain should not be ignored. Likewise, if the car feels less secure when cornering or there’s a noticeable loss of control, it’s worth having the system checked. Paying attention to these changes can help prevent further complications and ensure your vehicle continues to operate safely.

Maintaining your vehicle’s suspension and steering systems is crucial for ensuring a smooth and safe driving experience. At Highton Automotive Services, we make it easy to prioritise your vehicle's performance and safety by providing professional and thorough servicing tailored to your needs.
